In collaboration with Dr. Lisa Faust of Lincoln Park Zoo, Dr. Benjamin Beck, Great Ape Trust director of conservation, began a study to predict the number of great ape orphans that range country sanctuaries might have to accommodate in the next 50 years. The results are yet too preliminary to provide specifics, but we can confidently say that growth will be significant and inevitable. The Trust contributed $500 to help defray the costs of Dr. Faust’s travel to Rwanda to discuss the sanctuary growth project with ape sanctuary managers, and request their cooperation in providing historical data on the apes they have taken in. |
