"Orangutans move very deliberately but with a great measure of grace and delicacy. My job is to capture that deliberateness, power and gentleness. To be able to work with your subject matter 250 feet away is an exciting prospect."

Ohio artist David Petlowany is between a rock and a good place.
Ohio artist David Petlowany is between a rock and a good place. Great Ape Trust of Iowa has commissioned him to sculpt a life-size likeness of a male orangutan, Azy, out of Indiana limestone. The 150 cubic feet of stone is 8 ½ feet high and weighs more than 23,000 pounds. Petlowany and Great Ape Trust plan to share the experience with the public by inviting students and prospective artists to the campus for a hands-on experience.
